Argentine coach Ricardo Lavolpe, who was coaching Mexico at the time, stepped down as coach after the tournament, and was succeeded by Mexican legend Hugo Sánchez.
After losing the final match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2007 1-2 against the United States, Mexico successfully rebounded with a remarkable first-round participation at CONMEBOL Copa America 2007. Beginning by beating the recent champions Brazil 2-0 (goals from: Nery Castillo 23' and Ramón Morales 28') in their first match, they then went on to defeat Ecuador 2-1 (goals from: Nery Castillo 21' and Omar Bravo 79'). For their final match they tied 0-0 with Chile. With those results Mexico came first in Group B with seven points.
In the quarterfinals, Mexico beat Paraguay 6-0 but lost in the semi-finals 3-0 to Argentina. With this defeat, Mexico was left to fight for third place against Uruguay, winning 3-1 and claiming the bronze trophy.
In July 2009 Mexico won their fifth Gold Cup, and eighth CONCACAF Championship overall, after beating the United States 5–0 in the final after almost 10 years of not winning a game on United States soil.
On October 10, 2009 Mexico qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup after defeating El Salvador 4-1 in Estadio Azteca.

Post-WWII
Mexico did not appear again in a World Cup tournament until the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Before 1970, Mexico struggled to make much of an impact in the World Cup when competing against European and South American teams. However, goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal has the distinction of being the first player ever to appear in five consecutive FIFA World Cups.
In 1970, Mexico hosted the World Cup and kicked off their campaign with a scoreless draw against the Soviet Union. This was followed by a win over El Salvador (4–0). Mexico advanced to the next round with a victory against Belgium thanks to a penalty scored by Gustavo Peña in the 14th minute. At the quarter-finals stage, Mexico was eliminated by Italy in a 4–1 match despite Mexico taking an early lead.
Mexico failed to qualify for the 1974 FIFA World Cup and did not appear at the world stage until the Argentina '78. Mexico suffered an early exit after three defeats: 0-6 against West Germany, 1-3 against Tunisia, and 1-3 to Poland. Mexico failed to qualify for Spain 1982.

Mexico was disqualified from the 1990 FIFA World Cup (and any other international competition) after using players over the age limit allowed by FIFA in the qualifying round for the Olympic Games in Seoul 1988. The punishment originally was only going to be applied to the Olympic team and not the World Cup team, but the penalty was applied to all Mexican national representatives of all sports for two years. This was a hard intake, as this was the golden time for the legendary striker Hugo Sanchez, where in the next World Cup, he was just considered a "good" player, instead of a "legendary" one.
In the 1990s, after hiring coach César Luis Menotti, Mexican football began experiencing greater international success. An important turning point was its participation in the 1993 Copa America, where they finished second in the tournament, losing to Argentina 2-1 in the final. Mexico went on to win its group on tiebreakers in the 1994 World Cup, emerging from the tournament's "Group of death", composed of Mexico, Italy, Ireland, and Norway. However, Mexico eventually lost in the second round to Bulgaria on penalty kicks. Miguel Mejía Barón led this team into one of its most distinguished performances in a World Cup.
Since their second place finish in the 1993 Copa America, Mexico has been a regular participant in the South American tournament and has competed well. It earned third place in 1997, 1999 and 2007 and another second-place finish in 2001. Monterrey Champion
The Club de Futbol Monterrey is a Mexican football club from Monterrey, Nuevo León. Founded on 28 June 1945, it is also the oldest team from the north of Mexico currently playing in its professional division. They are owned by FEMSA, Latin America's largest bottling company.
What a Final they have played in thier local tournament! Very exciting, a lot of goals a bit of a twist. Mostly they deserved to be champion.
1st Game:
In Monterrey, Cruz Azul came out with the first 4 goals. Ok, 1 was an own goal. This had hopes of turning out Monterreys way. 1st half was all Cruz Azul.
2nd Half though was all Monterrey and they came out to win the game 4-3, with goal by Suazo and Santana. What excitement and a let down for Cruz Azul. It looked like yet again they were going to choke at the end.
2nd Game
Aldo DeNigris started the scoring with the first goal and hopes were high. Cruz Azul got it back, but Suazo finished them with a nice goal past Corona.
Monterrey deserved this championship, they played with heart. The match of goalkeepers was definitely won by Orozco. Corona looked bad on many occasions, especially on that ball that went through his legs for a Suazo goal in the first leg.

Formation of the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol
On August 23, 1927, the official governing body of the sport of football in Mexico was founded. From its inception, the federation has been the main body in charge of the promotion, administration, organization, management, and funding of the Mexican national football team as well as all football competition within Mexico. Mexican football league system
The Mexican football league system is the national football competition system in Mexico. It is organized by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación (Mexican Football Federation) and consists of four levels.
The Primera División (First Division) is the highest level of Mexican football and consists of 18 clubs divided into three groups of six clubs each. Each calendar year is split into two short tournaments, the Apertura (Opening) and the Clausura (Closing). Each short tournament a club plays the other 17 clubs once, where the home team is switched depending on which short tournament is currently being played.
One club is relegated to the Liga de Ascenso each year (two short tournaments). To determine the club to be relegated, the ratio of points to games is kept for each team. The club that has the worst points to games ratio over the previous three years (six short tournaments) is relegated to the Liga de Ascenso.

Its a great unfortune for the Mexicans that Mexico has qualified for thirteen World Cups and has qualified consecutively since 1994 but even then they are unable to use these chances into reality and they hav not win the World Cup even a single time.

Mexico Team in recent years
After a tough qualifying campaign for the 2002 World Cup, Mexico reached the finals and was placed in Group G alongside Italy, Croatia, Ecuador. Mexico opened its participation with a 1-0 win over Croatia. In the second match, Mexico earned a 2-1 win over Ecuador with goals from Jared Borgetti and Gerardo Torrado.
